At least two persons were killed and many others injured on Thursday (March 30) as a fire broke out in a hotel in India's eastern Kolkata city.
The injured were rushed to different local hospitals and three were discharged shortly after.
The incident took place at about 3:00 am (GMT 2130) in hotel Ho Chi Minh Sarani, located opposite to British Deputy High Commission and the US Consulate.
Reportedly, the hotel staff and guests noticed the smoke and fire coming out of the pantry and informed the fire department that reached the spot and doused the fire at about 6:00 am (GMT 0030).
Panic-stricken guests got out of the windows of their room and climbed down through pipes.
The cause of the fire is not yet clear and an investigation is underway to ascertain the same.
Fire safety regulations are lax, rarely implemented and not periodically reviewed in most places across India, which results in the breaking of major fires, resulting in loss of life and material.
